Ceiling Crack (ceiling repair)
What to do with a cracked ceiling?
Damages and cracks in the ceiling of the house have happened to many people. The presence of cracks in the ceiling creates an unpleasant view, but its repair and reconstruction can be effective in creating a beautiful atmosphere.
Evacuate and prepare the space
The first thing you need to do is to use a plastic sheet on the floor to prevent it from getting dirty.
This is done because whilst doing the work, the particles of gypsum or putty that you use, spill on the room’s floor and make it dirty.
This will usually result in construction debris.
If possible, remove items from the room below the crack.
Cut and drain the cracked area
In this step, you have to mark around the damaged area and create a box around it. To do this, you can use a special tool that resembles a knife. Precaution should be taken, as it may damage the area around the ceiling.
If the crack in the ceiling is small, just increase the gap a little so that the putty can be placed in it. However, on the contrary if there are many cracks, try to destroy the cracked environment with a larger device.
At this stage, what you need to continue working is a sheet of mesh. These sheets adhere well to the damaged area. It’s possible to use these sheets on it, depending on the size of the cracked space.
Be careful not to use more than one layer of mesh sheet on the affected area.
Priming
At this stage, start making putty.
To do this, mix the special powder with warm water.
The concentration of the putty you create should be similar to the concentration of mayonnaise.
At this stage, use a spatula to apply a thin layer of putty on the mesh sheet.
Note that the surface of the mesh sheet is completely covered with putty.
To do this, pull the spatula on one side of the mesh sheet and try to do it at high speed.
After doing this, let the putty dry completely.
Sanding on a restorative ceiling
If the ceiling is designed in such a way that there is a special texture in it, you can use the help of an expert before the putty dries to design the texture. You can use a brush or sponge to do this. Then, sand the desired surface after it’s completely dry. This will create a uniform surface. Be careful not to overdo it. The drying time of the putty varies according to the purchased product.
At this stage, sand around the mesh sheet that has been putty, with a sponge sandpaper. Do this carefully. Continue sanding until a uniform surface is created but be careful not to overdue it.
Ceiling painting
At this stage, it is time to paint it.
To do this, you must first select a colour that matches the colour of the ceiling.
To choose the right colour, it’s better to buy a sample of several similar colours and compare them to the ceiling.
The next step after choosing the right colour, is to use a brush to paint the ceiling.
After painting and drying, the colour and texture of this part should be in harmony with the colour and texture of other parts of the ceiling. It’s usually difficult to coordinate both colours and isn’t possible. Usually, all those parts are painted, and the smell of paint must be tolerated for a few days.
These steps may be repeated every year since the presence of cracks in a ceiling or a wall, makes decoration ugly and unbearable.
What causes cracks in the ceiling or walls?
We now turn to the factors that cause cracks.
The various factors that cause cracks in the building are:
- Loss of foundation due to various factors such as humidity, pressures from ceiling and lack of soil bearing capacity
- Infiltration of salt or sulfates and corrosive substances in concrete
- Execution or design errors in concrete structures
- Fire
- Type of materials used
- Carbonation which causes corrosion of the reinforcement and eventually cracks in the concrete
Hence, cracks are divided into two categories: structural and non-structural cracks. The method of prevention and repair of each is separate.
